Hello,
I hope you are having a wonderful summer. Summertime often tends to be a time for vacation so I thought we could discuss healthy habits while traveling. I’ve also recently come back from a vacation to Ibiza and Barcelona so this topic is fresh in my mind.
Vacations are the perfect time to relax, unwind, and indulge in delightful culinary experiences. However, it can be challenging to maintain a healthy diet while surrounded by decadent dishes and tempting treats, especially if they are unique to the region you are visiting. The good news is that eating healthy on vacation is not an impossible feat. By following a few smart strategies, you can savor the local flavors while keeping your well-being in check. Let’s explore 7 tips for nourishing your body and soul during your next getaway.
Eat What You Love, Mindfully
Vacations are about enjoying the moments, and that includes eating food you love. Instead of restricting yourself, approach your meals with mindfulness. Savor every bite and eat slowly to truly appreciate the flavors. Allow yourself to indulge in occasional treats but remember to balance them with healthier options. By being mindful of your portions and eating with intention, you can savor the culinary delights without overindulging.
My tip: I love starting my day with avocado toast and eggs when traveling. It sustains me for several hours. When in Spain, we enjoyed lots of sea bass and filet of sole.
Embrace the Colors of Nutrition: Add Veggies or Fruit to Each Meal
Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring, even on vacation! Embrace the vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables. Seek out local markets to explore a wide variety of produce and experiment with new flavors. Whether it’s a refreshing fruit salad for breakfast or a side of grilled vegetables with your dinner, adding these nutrient-rich options to your meals will not only enhance the taste but also boost your overall well-being.
My tip: I love to add fruit or vegetables to every meal. I take advantage of what is available in the region where I am traveling to. I enjoyed lots of fresh berries and melons and tasty salads with olive oil, lemon, and vinegar.
Dive into Cultural Offerings: Healthy and Flavorful
When in a new place, immerse yourself in the local cuisine. Many cultural dishes are not only delicious but also packed with wholesome ingredients. Look for traditional dishes that incorporate fresh herbs, lean proteins, and whole grains. Trying local delicacies allows you to experience the true essence of the destination while maintaining a healthier balance.
My tip: Choose a healthy offering unique to the region you are visiting. In Spain I enjoyed lots of Gazpacho which was so refreshing on a hot summer day.
Stay Active: Explore and Exercise
Staying active on vacation not only helps you burn off those extra calories but also allows you to explore the destination in a unique way. Take advantage of your new surroundings by going for a morning hike, exploring the city on foot, or enjoying a swim in the ocean. Engaging in physical activities will not only keep you fit but also enhance your vacation experience.
My tip: I love swimming, yoga, and walking on the beach whenever possible. I wear my sneakers on the plane and always pack my goggles and swimsuit in my carryon luggage, just in case…
Here, I was adventurous and tried an aerial yoga class.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Amidst the excitement and indulgence, it’s easy to forget about hydration. However, drinking enough water is crucial for maintaining good health, especially in warm climates. Carry a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go and make a conscious effort to drink water regularly. You can also quench your thirst with natural fruit-infused water or herbal teas for added flavor and health benefits.
My tip: I love adding cucumbers or lemon and mint to my water or sparkling water.
Cook Your Own Meals: A Fun and Healthy Experience
If you have access to a kitchen during your vacation, consider cooking your own meals occasionally. It’s not only a budget-friendly option but also allows you to control the ingredients and portion sizes. Collaborate with your travel companions to prepare a meal together, making it a fun and memorable experience that fosters a sense of togetherness.
My tip: While this was not possible on my most recent trip, we took advantage of the breakfast buffet to pack healthy fruits and vegetables as an afternoon snack.
Plan Ahead: Balance and Enjoyment
Lastly, strike a balance between your healthy eating goals and enjoying the culinary delights of your vacation destination. Plan your meals ahead of time, choosing healthier options whenever possible, but also allow room for spontaneous indulgences. After all, a vacation is a time to create cherished memories, and that includes savoring unique and decadent treats.
My tip: I try to review restaurant menus online so I get a sense for the offerings and for what dishes I may want to try. I also plan exercise into my day—whether it’s going on a walking tour, taking a quick swim in the morning, or enjoying a yoga class in the early evening. And I enjoy foods I love while practicing portion control, of course.
Happy and healthy travels!
Warmly,
Lisa
