During these uncertain times, it’s not unusual to be feeling stressed and anxious. The world is different than we know it before this pandemic began. Social distancing, which has become the norm, is particularly challenging and something as simple as supermarket shopping has become a major production. We also don’t know how things will play out in the near future. For the good news, however, there are steps we can take to weather this storm and to feel even a little bit calmer. Here are several simple tips to help you manage your anxiety and feel more at peace during this pandemic.
- Be grateful.
During stressful times, like these times of coronavirus, it is easy to focus on what is not going well. However, finding time each day to reflect on what is going well and what we are grateful for can help to balance our perspective. I keep a gratitude journal in the morning and write down 5 things I am grateful for each day. If for nothing else, it helps me see how much is going right.
- Get moving.
Our normal exercise schedules have been disrupted but luckily with technology, we can still take exercise classes. A ton of You Tube videos and apps exist for virtual yoga, Pilates, and other exercise classes. If you are lucky enough to live in a house, do some house walking. The steps will add up. Jumping rope and free weights are also great to use. I suggest cultivating a daily practice for at least 30 minutes. We aren’t commuting to work so we have more time on our hands for exercise.
- Go outdoors.
I love nature and enjoy being outside. In fact, walking outdoors is one of my favorite pastimes and you can still do it these days. Walking is great both for the body and the brain so let those steps add up. I have a dog which requires me to get outdoors regularly. If you live near a park, even better. The greenery is very calming and being outside in nature helps give me a fresh perspective on things.
- Take time to meditate.
If you don’t meditate, now is a great time to start. In my book Finally Full, Finally Slim, I write about the 3 Ms or snacks for the soul—music, massage, and meditation. They help you unwind, reduce stress, and keep you centered. Meditation can help to reduce general anxiety, especially the stress many of us are currently experiencing. In fact, it’s no surprise that there are numerous meditations out there on the internet tailored to COVID-19. Working meditation into your day is easier than you might think and as I wrote here, to start all you need is a quiet space and 5-10 minutes if you are just starting out. Consistency is important so it’s better to meditate for a few minutes each day than for 30 minutes once a week.
- Declutter.
Now that we are hunkered down at home, it’s a perfect time to begin clearing out the clutter. I know what you’re thinking—who wants to do this now? I’ve written about how decluttering our kitchen is good for our waistlines. Attacking other parts of our house will also help us de-stress, feel calmer, and even feel like we accomplished something. Start with one drawer or one closet and do what you can. 30 minutes each day will add up. It’s worth a go.
- Develop a regular sleep schedule.
With our daily schedules disrupted, you may find that your sleep schedule has changed too. Getting adequate sleep is so important to help us manage stress as well as our moods and day to day tasks. It’s important to create a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time. Avoiding caffeine and creating a relaxing bedtime ritual is also super important.
