Hello,
When it comes to nutrition, our mindset and the language we use can profoundly influence our relationship with food. Shifting from a restrictive or guilt-ridden approach to a more positive and empowering one can transform how we view eating, helping us to make healthier choices that feel good rather than forced. One of the most impactful ways to foster this positive shift is by changing the words we use.
Here’s how simple mindshifts and language tweaks can promote a healthier, happier approach to nutrition.
From “Should” to “Could”
The word “should” often carries a sense of obligation or guilt. When we tell ourselves we “should” eat more vegetables, drink more water, or avoid certain foods, it can feel like a burden, leading to resistance or even rebellion. On the other hand, replacing “should” with “could” opens up possibilities and choice. “I could eat more vegetables” or “I could have water instead of soda” empowers us to make decisions that align with our health goals without the weight of obligation. It’s a subtle but powerful shift that transforms a demand into an opportunity.
From “I Can’t” to “I Choose”
Saying “I can’t eat that” implies deprivation, which can trigger feelings of resentment or lead to a binge-and-restrict cycle. Instead, saying “I choose not to eat that” emphasizes personal agency and control. This shift acknowledges that you have the power to make choices based on what’s best for your body and health. For example, saying “I choose not to eat dessert tonight because I want to feel good tomorrow” is much more empowering than “I can’t have dessert because I’m on a diet.” The former respects your ability to decide what’s best for you in the moment.
From “Cheat” to “Choice”
The concept of a “cheat meal” can create a harmful dichotomy of good versus bad foods, leading to guilt and shame when you indulge. Instead, view every meal as a choice. Labeling certain foods or meals as “cheating” implies you’re doing something wrong, which can undermine your relationship with food and with yourself. By seeing all your food choices as valid, whether it’s a salad or a slice of pizza, you remove the moral judgment and reduce the emotional baggage around eating.
From “Restriction” to “Abundance”
Focusing on what you can’t have or shouldn’t eat can make healthy eating feel restrictive and unsustainable. Instead, embrace an abundance mindset by focusing on the variety of nourishing foods you can enjoy. For example, rather than fixating on cutting out carbs, think about all the colorful fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and proteins you can add to your plate. This shift from scarcity to abundance makes healthy eating more enjoyable and sustainable.
From “Failure” to “Learning”
When we stumble on our nutrition journey, it’s easy to label ourselves as failures. But every misstep is an opportunity to learn and grow. Instead of saying, “I failed because I ate too much,” try reframing it as, “I learned that I need to pay more attention to my hunger cues.” This shift promotes a growth mindset, helping you to see setbacks as part of the process rather than as definitive failures.
By consciously shifting your language and mindset around food, you can create a more positive, empowering approach to nutrition. Words have power, and by choosing them wisely, you can foster a healthier relationship with food that’s based on choice, abundance, and self-compassion. Instead of feeling restricted or guilty, you’ll find that healthy eating becomes a natural and enjoyable part of your life.
Have a healthy week!
Warmly,
Lisa
