We hear a lot about inflammation but what is it and how can a good diet help reduce inflammation?
Inflammation occurs when your body encounters an offending agents, like a virus, or an injury. Your immune system is activated, releasing inflammatory cells and cytokines (substances that stimulate more inflammatory cells).
Inflammation in the body is common, and while sometimes it may help your body defend itself from injection and injury, often times chronic inflammation can lead to disease.
Here’s the good news—there are some foods that can help decrease chronic inflammation. Try to include some of them into your diet to help combat inflammation and improve your disease state. And, when it comes to practicing good nutrition for better health, the more whole foods and fewer ultra-processed foods (like sugary drinks, cakes, and fast food) you eat, the better.
Berries—Berries contain antioxidants, which have anti-inflammatory effects that reduce your risk of disease.
Avocados—Avocados are not only packed with potassium, magnesium, and fiber, but they also contain carotenoids and tocopherols, which have been found to reduce risk of cancer and decrease inflammation as well.
Fatty Fish— Fatty fish provide a great source of protein and long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s may help reduce inflammation.
Leafy Greens—Leafy greens are jam packed with vitamin E, a natural antioxidant proven to reduce inflammation in the body.
Turmeric— Turmeric, a spice often used in Indian cuisine, has powerful anti-inflammatory effects because it contains curcumin.
Broccoli—Broccoli is rich in sulforaphane, which is an antioxidant that decreases inflammation by reducing your levels of cytokines.
